Can designs can be used to promote different holidays or seasons. The Fanta cans have been designed to have Halloween characters on it making the can seasonal representing Halloween.
The aesthetic for the design is relevant for the brand as it fits the flavour or theme the brand is portraying. The Pepsi can is promoting shanghai fashion week and has images to represent that.
What is Fanta? Fanta is a fruit flavoured carbonated soft drink owned by Coca-Cola, and invented in 1940. It has become one of Coca-Colas best selling drinks being the second best selling soft drink worldwide.
There are over 100 existing Fanta flavours, Top 5 most interesting in my opinion are- Milk, Banana, Lychee, Grape and Chocolate Orange.
These designs would be unusual and cool on a can due to the vibrant and odd designs making cans gather attention. if I were to change the designs I would change the colours of the design to stand out making the typography even more detectable.
3 possible Fanta flavours are chocolate milk, toxic waster (sour) and star fruit. Chocolate milk will be a light, creamy drink with light brown as the main colour. Toxic waste will be a tangy, sour drink with lime green as the main colour. Star fruit will be a sweet, refreshing drink with a galactical purple as the main colour.
The adobe colour wheel generates colours that contrast or match with a chosen colour. it generates 5 colours along with the hex code in RGB and CMYK. The colour wheel allows you to adjust the hue, saturation and value of a colour. the hue is the colour itself, saturation is how intense the colour is and value determines how dark or light you make the colour.
I have chosen to do a toxic waste Fanta flavour.

My firs design includes toxic symbols and a canister leaking toxic fluids this relates to the flavour because sour tastes relates to toxicity therefore I have kept that idea with all of my designs. My second design includes a skull and cross bones and bubbles, if I were to change the design I would replace the skull with a symbol as the skull gives off the idea of a pirate
and that does not relate to the flavour, the bubbles in the design show that the drink is fizzy and makes the drink seem appetising. For my third design I have included an industry plant building as this gives an eerie vibe towards the drink, I have also included an industry plant building as that gives off the toxic waste image and allows the drink to represent the flavour.
The initial design for my Fanta flavour logo was a toxic symbol with a black background, this idea represented my flavour well and showcased my flavour well.
I started to include bubbles, to fill up some space and show that the drink was fizzy, bubbles were used because they have a positive attitude towards people making the drink not intimidating, the added typography is in the same font as original Fanta bottles making the logo not abstract.
I further included bubbles going out of the logo circle with the intention to have a clear background behind them however the yellow bubbles did not stand out and would blend in with the background.
To fix the problems i had, I included a background with a glow effect on because the glow effect make the label look toxic and radioactive which fit with the flavour perfectly, this also allowed the bubbles to stand out.
I focused on the flavour below and changed the writing to white as the black was not legible from a distance, I further changed the placement of the flavour to be in the correct position (slightly diagonal and underlining the "FANTA") this made the label look authentic and like a real Fanta flavour.
This is my final logo design, I dimmed the glow effect as it was overwhelming and was distracting, the bubble placement has also been moved to fit into the circle this idea gave me room for a logo that didn't take attention away from the logo making the drink recognisable. The inner glow effect i applied makes the logo pop out making this logo design ideal for a label as it does not get lost in a crown and is recognisable when viewing it from a distance.
Recognising brand competitors are important because you can see the competitors drink designs and advertisements allowing you to improve the design further, allowing you to have a design that has improved the flaws of another brands design this will allow you to have a design that is better than the original design.
I have researched Coca-Cola as they are the biggest soda company in the world, this makes a good competitor as they have been able to gain millions of loyal customers, as well as being able to come out with new flavours and gain instant success. Coca-Cola successfully design the brand by using a signature red that is easily recognisable, designs also include a silver and black which have become well known for being diet coke or coke zero. Advertisements are very well known especially with the Coca-Cola truck advertisements that are aired every Christmas, using seasonal advertisements allows Coca-Cola to gain multiple customers with the festive Santa and truck adverts. I do not like how the design is plain, due to the success of Coca-Cola, the brand is able to have a plain can and still gain success however the plain cans are boring and not as interesting to look at. I could make my design better than my competitor by having eye-catching design and advertisements that will reach my target audience by promoting my design on social media, i will improve my design by including my signature colours for my flavour design.
Lipton iced tea is a competitor as they have gained popularity from the refreshing drink, Lipton have expanded their brand into multiple flavours and tea bags. Lipton successfully designed a drinks bottle with a healthy looking design showing fruit, this targets a specific audience and has the power to gain new customers from the design alone, the advertisements are very bright and bold with text that shows off the design along with catchphrases describing the drink positively. If I were to improve the design I would include a less busy label design as it becomes crowded and not memorable. I would be able to improve my design from Lipton's as I will be able to have a design that stands out from Lipton ice tea and I will be able to entice customers with a new flavour that has never been done unlike the common flavours of Lipton.
Oasis is a competitor as they have made a sour drink this makes oasis a major competitor as they are already very successful and have gained a mass amount of customers, oasis is a refreshing fruit drink targeted at teenagers and young adults. Oasis' designs are successful due to significant colours used to be eye-catching and seasonal for summer, the design includes appealing fruits and has bright colours to attract users. The adverts for Oasis are for a refreshing drink to have in summer, the advertisements are very obviously promoting oasis allowing them to gain customers through the simplistic adverts. I do not like the repetitive design on the oasis bottle, although it has become part of oasis' branding the design becomes boring and does not have much difference in design between the flavours, if I were to improve the advertisements I would make oasis a refreshing drink to enjoy all year round by moving away from the summer aspect of the drink, I could improve my design using this by using their target audience to gain attention for my drink and improve the design by including a bright liquid colour to become eye-catching.
I plan on making my designs more unique by including bright designs and a unique label this will allow me to have a design that stands out therefore this will allow my design to be noticed. This will be unique compared to my competitors due to my flavour being different therefore I will have a design that reflects the new flavour which will be memorable and bright unlike many competitors who do not have as eye-catching designs or unique flavours.
This Fanta label is plain just like original Fanta labels, however the plain label design does not feel unique or different. i changed the composition of the label to make the recycle sign much more visible and noticeable
This Fanta label has the logo centralised to show the logo off as a centrepiece of the label. I included warning signs to fit in with the toxic theme the signs will be the significant colour yellow (#F7F70C) I have chosen for my design. This design gives an eerie vibe towards the label and makes the flavour and label work together.
This fanta label is much more busy than the others due to the smoke effect i will create on the label. The composition of the label is simplistic with text and information boxes scattered. The logo is in the same position as an original Fanta label to keep with the branding.
Drinks labels have simplistic monochromatic designs in the label background. with no outline as they do not want to take the attention away from the logo of the label.
This background label design fits with my theme as it is dark and works well with my colour choices. The cracked effect allows the logo to stand out and makes the bottle unique.
This label design is less obvious than any of the others it gives a subtle feel towards the background yet isn't plain and boring the hexagons all face the same angle to keep the attention on the logo.
This label background design include warning signs fitting perfectly with the flavour and logo of the bottle, however a warning like sign is already in then logo making the design blend into the logo and possibly making the bottle not stand out.
This label design has the most detail, and includes multiple colours with a gradient making this background unique and unlike other drinks bottles. The circles represent bubbles and will fit in with the colour of the liquid.
The label with the Fanta logo on I have chosen is the warning signs one as it allowed the logo to fit in without being too distracted by the background, I deleted any warning signs that there too close to the logo as it was distracting and looked out of place.
Guideline daily amount is a nutrition's fact label on food/drink, its a guide to the total amount of energy and nutrience that a typical healthy adult should consume.
Fanta's GDA design is simple and stands out due to the lack of colour compared to the rest of the bottle, the colour coded GDA makes the GDA easily understandable as most humans will not understand a GDA.
RI is reference intake they show the maximum amount calories and nutrience on average you should eat a day
The GDA I designed for my label is clear and easy to read I used different colour texts for the different subjects to make the GDA easily visible and readable, it is very thin allowing me to have space on the label for other items.
The RI I designed has curved edges to match the GDA this will make the entire label look much more professional and blend in. The sans serif font I used is easy to read especially when minimised making sure that everyone can read the RI when on the label.
This is my final product with coloured liquid in, I chose green liquid as it is eye-catching and allows the drink to become noticeable due to the black label making the drink less outstanding, however the yellow cap and green liquid are bright enough so that my drink stands out.
This is the can mock-up I created, the background represents the label with the warning signs, if I were to improve this I would make the can a lighter colour.
Project Evaluation
For this project, the aim was to create a new Fanta flavour initially, I had the idea of a fruit flavour however, as time progressed and I researched other flavours I decided to make a Toxic Waste flavour Fanta. This was effective as I was able to improve the design to fit the theme as time passed. This could be improved by including more colours as my colour choices are not as striking as brighter colours. The target audience for my Fanta flavour are teenagers and young adults this drink targets them as the drink is sour and that’s unusual allowing younger people to have a fun new drink, unlike any others.
The primary research I carried out was an Instagram poll asking, “would you drink a toxic waste flavoured Fanta”, all answers were ranged between 15-17 years old and there was a 100% yes answer for the drink Flavour. Secondary research I carried out was watching videos and news articles on what flavours the public enjoyed the most, this allowed me to create a flavour that would be loved by the public. Skills developed in this project were illustrator skills, I was able to learn and become comfortable with the pen tool, this took some time to understand however I have become used to it and the pen tool allowed me to make a professional-looking drinks label.
Problems I encountered were trying to include too much information on my label, to solve this problem I removed some information from my label such as a “recycle me again” sign as this took up a lot of space, I referred to the hierarchy of design to decide what to remove from my drinks label, in the end, I was able to have a label I was proud of and had all the right information. All deadlines were met on time as I used my time management skills to prioritise what to do at the moment, one thing I prioritised was making sure the logo was perfect this meant I got less time to annotate my work however I used my breaks to catch up on missing work this allowed me to have met all deadlines by the end of each day.
I think my project outcome was successful as I had created an entire drinks label to industry standard, as well as created a new flavour which I am proud of. I could bring my work to a more professional level by having a label made of plastic as then my flavour would look real and have even higher quality, with the higher quality I could make the text smaller and include more information. The most difficult task in the project was to come up with an idea that wasn’t already done as Fanta have hundreds of flavours it made it difficult to come up with an original idea, the flavours became unrealistic due to the number of flavours created therefore I had to come up with a flavour based on my interests.
